OUR GOAL

That every Saint John child succeed – regardless of socio-economic-status – from cradle to career.

Break the poverty cycle in Saint John graph

Today, in the City of Saint John, 1 in 6 residents live in poverty. Most concerning is that 1 in 4 children live in poverty and they are especially vulnerable to a lifetime of poverty if we don’t help them break the cycle. Charity alone is not the solution.

Since 2000, Saint John business leaders have been working with community leaders and government to research, test, and establish new approaches that remove the barriers that are trapping our families in poverty. We’ve learned that poverty can be significantly reduced when we invest in the children’s wellbeing and education success

BCAPI works with other leaders, organizations, and elected officials to:

  • Build quality programs and services that help vulnerable children, youth, and families to succeed, from cradle to career.

  • Provide adequate resources in low-income neighbourhoods and schools that improve well-being, educational achievement, and employment opportunities, and ensure every resident feels valued as a contributing member of a vibrant community.

Our Approach

At BCAPI, we take a COLLECTIVE IMPACT approach. What does this mean?

It means we bring everyone to the table: community members, business leaders, not-for-profit organizations, and government. Every voice is heard. This is the most effective way to create change.

BCAPI partners with leaders from all sectors to drive effective strategies that are well-researched and developed from best practices, that are measured and monitored to assess impact, and that achieve return on investment in ways that strengthen our city and province well into the future.

BCAPI’s approach is guided by research and best practices that effectively tackle the root causes of generational poverty. Tracking and evaluating the progress is VERY important to our success. Over the last two decades, BCAPI has made important strides. Our work has contributed to:

Substantially improving education outcomes for low-income children, from early childhood to high school completion and beyond.

Playing a pivotal role in implementing social innovations that change the life-trajectory of children who live in poverty and strengthen our city.

Building a city-wide movement to end generational poverty and achieve economic impact.

Serving as a catalyst for New Brunswick’s first poverty reduction plan.

Championing public policy improvements to strengthen how we help children to thrive.

Steadily reducing
poverty in Saint John.
